Breaking 90 – Chipping low for the dough

If you are not breaking 90 on a regular basis and you are bringing a sand or lob wedge to the side of the green for a chip shot – you are totally kidding yourself. Are you ready to get serious and make some up and downs?

Then grab your pitching wedge instead or your 8 iron instead.

Breaking 90 and short chip shots

If you are off the green to where putting is not an option, but you are inside of 20 yards, leave the high-lofted clubs in the bag. You need to be using an 8 iron or a PW at the very most – depending on the shot.

You think I’m full of it?

Go give it a shot at the practice green.

Pace out 10 yards, grab your pitching wedge, and drop 5 balls.

Set up normal and relaxed. Choke all the way up on the grip. Bring the club back about 30 degrees (just past your back foot about 1/3 toward perpendicular) and execute a simple putting stroke.

Pretend you are putting.

The pace is the weight of the club falling naturally.

Practice a few rounds of this.

Now pace off 15 yards and bring the club face 1/2 of the way up to waist high (45 degrees) and “putt” the ball with your PW.

How did THAT go?

Go to 20 yards and bring it 2/3 of the way up to your waist.

I find that my PW goes 10, 15, and 20 yards when I “putt” the ball with my PW. Take the club head up to 30 degrees, 45 degrees, and 60 degrees.

By the way, 90 is too much. I’ll take a different club at that point or I’ll “pitch” instead of chip.

Again, the pace is the natural falling speed of the club. The stroke is a putting stroke. I’m choked ALL the way up to where my fingers can feel the iron just below the grip. I’m pretty much using a putting grip.
